Gay Adoption Ad Airs During Olympics Despite initial controversy, a John Hancock insurance ad featuring a lesbian couple adopting a baby has been airing regularly during the Olympic broadcast over the past week and half.
Part of a series of four spots depicting "real life situations" under the tag "Insurance for the unexpected. Investments for the opportunities," the commercial shows two women picking up an Asian baby from the airport and rejoicing that "we're a family." When John Hancock gave it a test run during the National Gymnastics Championship in July, the company received complaints from adoption advocates fearing that the Chinese government, which refuses to accept applications from gay couples, would see the ad as proof that U.S. agencies were breaking the rules. John Hancock went ahead with the ad; a spokeswoman said that they've received both positive and negative feedback from viewers. She said that the spot's intention was "to speak to the fact that no matter show a child comes into the world, it's entitled to financial protection."
The other commercials in the series portray a recently divorced couple, a single mother contemplating marriage and a man forced to put his father in a nursing home.
A controversial Nike showing a woman in a sports bra and running shoes fleeing from a hockey mask-clad attacker a la "Friday the 13th" didn't make the cut. NBC ceased to air the spot, citing "adverse audience reaction." More Headlines
